Passionate About Lean

Brian Winningham is a Lean Construction Coach and Owner of Field Driven Lean, LLC. Brian has over 20 years’ experience leading, managing, planning and estimating construction projects. Brian is the leader (emeritus) of the San Antonio LCI Community of Practice (CoP). He is an LCI Approved Instructor for LCI training courses and an approved instructor for the AGC Lean Construction Education Program (LCEP). Brian is also a US Army Ranger Veteran and active with Veterans in his community

As a Lean Coach, Lean Leader and Lean Practitioner, Brian has coached general contractors, construction managers, and project teams on project types which include hospitals, K-12 schools, higher education facilities, data centers, high tech manufacturers and mixed-use developments. In these positions, Brian implemented and used many Lean tools and resources, including Last Planner System, Kaizen Events, 5S, A3 Thinking for Problem Solving and KanBan/Visual Management. Brian was a Lean leader at Skanska and SpawGlass, where he helped develop and deliver Lean training as well as set Lean policies for those companies.

Brian began his career working as a Pipe Fitter’s Apprentice in 1985 for the McIntosh Company in Oklahoma. As an employee owner at PCL Construction in Los Angeles, Brian served as Project Manager on projects which ranged from $1.5 million to $115 million and which included multi-family housing, K-12 schools, and a mixed-use development at the LA Live complex in downtown. During his time as a Senior Project Manager with Turner Construction, Brian worked on K-12 projects with a total value of approximately $70 million. It was while at Turner that Brian was introduced to Lean Construction and began his journey. Later, his career took him to Skanska where Brian led hospital, data center, higher education, clean room and mixed-use entertainment projects as a Senior Project Manager, with values ranging from $5 million to $225 million. After Brian joined SpawGlass as a Sr. Project Manager and Employee Owner, he worked on higher Education projects as well as a core and shell SCIF project with values ranging from $1 million to $10 million. Brian began Field Driven Lean in 2018, bringing his knowledge from the field and office to help teams excel!

In 1988 Brian enlisted in the Army and served for four years at 3rd Ranger Battalion in Fort Benning, Georgia. During his enlistment he made a night combat parachute jump in support of Operation Just Cause, to help liberate the country of Panama. During his enlistment, Brian graduated from the following technical and leadership schools: Ranger Indoctrination Program, Ranger School, Primary Leadership Development Course, Infantry Mortar Platoon Leaders course and the Jumpmaster course.

Brian has always had a passion for training the next generation of builders and lean thinkers and as a Coach, he gets to engage and live that passion every day. 

​

Brian resides in San Antonio, Texas with his wife, their two daughters, Gus the Schnoodle and Lulu the Miniature Poodle.
